CHART — Cultural and Historical Analysis of Rhythms and Topography

Project

Project titleBackground map

Image remains embedded when you save your project. Drawings use image coordinates; they are not yet geographically referenced.

Map image layers

Overlay maps on the Canterbury reference image. Adjust transparency, scale, rotation and position; choose “Drag to align” to move a map directly. Source images remain unchanged.

Draw and explore

Select features or drag the map to pan.

Distance calibration

Select Calibrate / measure, then click two points on the map. Enter the known real-world distance, or leave it unknown to estimate using nearby calibrations. Repeat across the map to accommodate changing historical scale.

No measurement yet.

Estimates use distance-weighted nearby calibration segments. These are approximate, not true georeferenced distances. Export the JSON project to preserve calibrations.

Feature layers

Categories are optional. Use the colour swatch beside each category to set a consistent colour for its points, lines and areas. A first drawing creates an Uncategorised category automatically. Removing a populated category requires moving its features.

Feature details

Draw a feature or click an existing feature to edit it. Points represent places; lines represent streets and routes; areas represent parishes, properties and districts.

Street network & movement

Draw a line with the existing Line tool, save it, then select it and choose “Use selected line as road”. Roads connect where their vertices meet (within the snapping tolerance). Add a vertex at junctions; crossing lines alone do not form a junction.

Temporary obstructions

Select a road, enter a stall, gate closure, flood, crowd or other obstruction. A full closure prevents routing; other obstructions slow movement. Active hours and day types are respected.

Population & carrying capacity · V0.12

Enter documented or hypothetical populations. Citywide figures provide context; they are not automatically assigned to streets. Street crowding affects route estimates only where you provide occupancy and capacity.

Selected mapped area or street

Select a polygon (parish, market, ward) or a line (street). For streets, enter people present along the whole road segment at the scenario time, not total residents of adjacent houses.

Population & capacity overview

Include recorded street crowding in route simulationCrowding sensitivity (0–5)

Occupancy/capacity over 1 indicates a street above the chosen comfortable threshold, not necessarily an impassable street. Unknown values never count as zero. Estimated routes remain exploratory.

Add roads and choose two locations to calculate a route.

Distances use local calibrations where available. Results are exploratory and depend on traced road connectivity, assumed conditions and subjective sensory weights. No actual traveller behaviour is inferred.

Rhythmanalysis laboratory

Build evidence-led hypotheses about sensory experience and movement. Scores are qualitative scenarios, not reconstructed physical measurements.

−5 strongly discourages use; +5 strongly encourages use. These are scenario assumptions, not historical facts.

Wind sensitivity (0 = none, 2 = strong)

Wind direction in the scenario can elongate and shift the affected zone downwind. The route model uses the same directional influence, not just the displayed area.

For an unlinked observation, Save then click its location on the map. For roads or blockages, link to an existing line feature where possible.

Road multipliers describe relative ease of movement (0 = impassable; 0.5 = half speed; 1 = unchanged). They do not automatically calculate journeys. Reach is visualised with locally calibrated approximate distance. Neither sound nor odour contours represent validated acoustic or atmospheric dispersion.

Historical datasets

No dataset is included by default. Import a CSV or JSON file when needed, then link matching records to a selected mapped feature.

Imported records retain their original field values. Linking a record to a map feature does not imply the record proves an exact address.

Research integrity: A feature's position is an interpretation, not an automatically verified historical location. Keep original transcriptions, sources, and confidence assessments.
